STUDIO HURLEY + HUGHES
Architecture and Design
Residential Conversion, London
Reworking of a small, ground floor, split level, apartment in East Dulwich to create a more usuable, flexible space, where new interventions complement the existing Victorian fabric of the building.
The floor plan has been flipped and opened up to create two new south facing reception rooms that benefit from generous ceiling heights, an elevated position on the sloping site, and the few remaining decorative plaster details. Simple joinery details - the stripped back original sash windows, bare architraves and linings - have been used to create a common language between the two spaces.
Partitions at the lower level have been removed to allow light to penetrate into the deep, north facing plan. A curved plywood screen encloses the bathroom, whilst a new folding wall can be used to separate a section of the study to provide an additional bedroom.
